Review: Bluefinger Gaming Keyboard and Mouse Set

Reviewing as a set...

Keyboard:
This is a really good keyboard for the price, it's not a mechanical keyboard and you can tell right away, however I don't think that's how it's marketed anyways. I was looking for a good all-around keyboard for light gaming, looked and felt nice, and for a good price. This definitely fits the bill. Build quality is a little better than I expected at the price point. It feels solid and the keys feel pretty good. Bear in mind this is the keyboard style with the funky return key and backslash in the middle row, which if you're not used to can be frustrating at first, but since you can see that beforehand you'll know what you're getting into and does require some getting used to. Fortunately, my work has these kind of keyboards so it wasn't a problem for me. In fact, I'm using this keyboard for this review.. If you're not used to that I really like the colors, they are vibrant without being too bright. There are several options: first, you can just have it stay a solid color and can rotate between the 3 individually(green, light blue, dark blue), you can have it pulse on one color, or have it pulse between all 3 colors. I tend to just pick one color and go with it (green being my personal favorite).

Mouse:
The mouse has a great feel to it. I like the braided cabling and the length is just right. The clicking feels good and the DPI is good enough for causal gaming and day-to-day use. I really like the colors and design. I do not believe there's a way to stay on a single color from what I have seen, but I prefer it going through all the colors anyways, looks really cool.

Mouse Pad:
It's a good size and really accommodates the bundled mouse. The mouse glides on it smoothly and I have not had a problem and I don't realize it's there (which is a good thing). However, the sharp edges on the mouse will catch on the outside stitching occasionally and this would be my only minor complaint.

Besides the minor complaint about the stitching getting caught on the mouse occasionally, this is a great casual gaming set for the price. It looks awesome with my Alienware Alpha and really completes the look. I love the colors and the overall feel. Honestly, it just looks awesome. I would highly recommend this set.

Review: Trianium Artisan Series Aluminum Back Plate iPhone 6 Plus Case - Silver

This is a great looking case at the cost of some protection. The case fits on real easily but stays in place solid, but it still easy to remove if you desire. The first thing you'll notice is that one of the design choices was the partially expose the corners, it looks really cool, but I worry that it could still dent the corners if dropped just right. This could be a concern for some, but look at the attached pictures and you can decide for yourself.

I would like to note that the finish is pretty slippery so it's more likely it could slip out of your hands. So if you just need a case that looks really good and need minimal protection (mostly scratches) than this is a good case, but if you're worried about dropping it then I would look for something that offers a little more protection and bulk.

Review: Sport Armband, Trianium ArmTrek Armband

This is a good armband case. The Velcro is plenty strong and holds well during activity. I also liked how it was comfortable and did not get in the way while working out. I was able to fit the phone in the armband with a slim case on it. I will also not that my phone has a tempered glass screen protector and worked fine through the armband window. You only have access to the headphone port which honestly is all you really need for physical activity anyways. There are no side cutouts for the volume and power buttons and you would not be able to charge the phone while in the arm band since there is not charge port access. This may or may not be a problem for some.
Pros:
+ Comfortable.
+ Windows doesn't hamper use.
+ Secure during physical activity.
+ Easy headphone access.

Cons:
- No lightning port access.
- Power and volume buttons difficult to access.

Review: Lumsing Bluetooth Headset

This is a really nice headset for the price. It's small, sleek, simple, and stylish. It came in a plain and simple cardboard box, but don't let that fool you. It comes with several sizes of earpieces for the correct fit and I found them to be plenty comfortable. Connecting to my iPhone was dead simple and I had no issues.

The thing I liked most about it is it's looks, it's small, indiscreet, and has a narrow profile so I don't feel awkward using it in public. Battery life is as good as you could expect, it was still working after a day of normal phone use. Sound quality was good though I wish they could have been a smidge louder, but that's just me. The charger is proprietary and plugs into USB, though I could see how people could lose it easily. I would definitely recommend these!

Pros:
+ Stylish and small.
+ Clear audio.
+ Easy to connect.
+ Good battery life.
+ Nice fit.

Cons:
- Proprietary charger could be easy to lose.
- A little on the quiet side.

I would definitely recommend this set of bluetooth headphones for people looking for the best bang for their buck without sacrificing looks and ease of use.

Review: OSOMount Vent Luxe

I will first start out by saying that I'm not usually a fan of the vent mounts, typically because vents can vary and I haven't had much luck getting them to stay in position.

The OSOMount is the best vent mount I have tried. Here's a summary of pros/cons:

Pros
+ Stiff clip for mounting on vent (moves less)
+ Open big for easy use on iPhone 6s Plus
+ Large grips so phone stays in place.

Cons
- Ball joint could be stiffer, tends to wobble a little.
- Spring was weaker than I was hoping and could be stronger, but still works well enough to hold phone in place worry free.

In summary, this is about the best vent mount you'll find. The mount itself is good quality and has a good, solid clip mount and great grip. The only thing I would change is a tighter spring and a stiffer ball joints. If you're in the market for a vent mount I would recommend this.

Review: EasyAcc 2nd Gen Colorful 10000mAh Power Bank

I have used many portable chargers and this particular one from EasyAcc stands out as the best balance of capacity and portability. The charger itself is roughly the exact size of my iPhone 6 Plus and I found it extremely easy to tote around. There's easily enough for two full charges (from 0-100%) for the iPhone 6+ and then enough for about a half charge. For the iPhone 6 you should be able to eek out 4 full charges. On my iPad Air 2 I was able o charge it from 50% to 100% (screen off) pretty easily, I just did it overnight. You have to keep in mind that the phone is still drawing power while you are charging which is why you can't just simply divide out exactly. It's like filling smaller buckets with small leaks if that makes sense.

I like the colors and thin design. It's very attractive and easy to carry on the go. It may not be able to keep all your devices going over a weekend trip, but for a single day use this by far has the best balance of energy and portability. Highly recommended.

News: Microsoft HoloLens and Minecraft - A Match Made in Heaven

It's no secret to those who know me that I love Minecraft. I also love all things technology and one thing I have been keeping my eye on is VR (Virtual Reality). There are a lot of major players out there right now working on this technology as we speak: Sony, Microsoft, and Oculus Rift (owned by Facebook of all companies). One of these has stood out to me more recently and that is Microsoft's HoloLens.

The HoloLens was demonstrated running their recently acquired IP from Mojang game called Minecraft. Let's just say that the E3 demo impressed me, nay, made me drool. Minecraft and VR are a match made in heaven which made me wondering when I could run such a setup. Who wouldn't enjoy feeling like they were part of their Minecraft creations? I know I would! Enjoy the video below and leave your thoughts!

Review: Merit Sweatproof Bluetooth 4.1 Headset

The Merit Sweatproof Bluetooth 4.1 Headset is great value workout headphone. I've been using them for a little while now and have very much enjoyed using them. While I am no workout junkie by any stretch (seriously), I found them a pleasure to use. Here is a breakdown of the pros/cons:

Pros:
+ Easy bluetooth pairing. Couldn't test NFC pairing on my iPhone 6+.
+ Lightweight.
+ Sweatproof. (Mowing the lawn in 100+ degree weather counts.)
+ Cable perfect length.
+ Excellent battery life and fast charging.
+ Microphone works great.

Neutral:
= Sound isn't best in class, but definitely better than default Apple Earpods.
= Siri doesn't work super great, but I didn't expect it to.

Cons:
- Kind of big.
- Inserts are a little stiff.

Overall, given the price and features, this is an excellent value. If you're looking for an audiophile pair of bluetooth headphones then these are definitely not it, but that's not the target market. These are meant to be a simple, no-fuss bluetooth headphone that will last for a while and deliver your tunes while breaking a sweat. Highly recommended.

Review: EasyAcc USB 3.0 Card Reader

In today's world, all of our data has to be stored somewhere, and if you are into photography like myself, you probably have a mix of cards lying around. It's becoming more critical to transfer that data quickly from one medium to another.
The card reader itself has a nice finish and is very solid, though it is a tad bigger than others, but this is just a minor issue. It comes with a USB 3.0 cable which will work on any computer, Mac or PC, with a USB port (USB 3.0 is backward compatible) and does not require any drivers. It supports these card formats (which will suit 99.9% of people needs): MS, TF, M2, SD, XD, and CF. Though, another minor quibble would be a Micro-SD slot as well. To be fair, most micro-SD cards come with an SD adapter, I just don't always have mine with me.

My test set up was to take a lot of pictures on my Canon 6D in RAW mode with a 64GB Lexar SDXC 90MB/s, where most images are about 25MB apiece. In the end, I had 3.04GB of data spread across 124 files. The test was to check the time it would take to transfer all 124 files from the camera's USB port and then from the EasyAcc USB 3.0 card reader. I chose this setup, because for me, this is the most common use case. Here are the results:

From Camera: 4 minutes 25 seconds
From Card Reader: 0 minutes 50 seconds

I think one of the telling factors here is I believe the Canon 6D is only USB 2.0 compliant which would explain the speed difference. In retrospect, I'm starting to wonder how I ever got by transferring my images over the camera USB and not a card reader such as this, especially since I have had USB 3.0 for a while.

Overall, this is a great little unit and will be an integral part of my photography workflow, especially during weddings when I need to transfer pictures quickly. Recommended.

Review: PB6400CS Portable Charger

Portable chargers have become a staple for me lately. If you are even remotely a gear junkie like myself, then one of these bad boys is a must have. If you're traveling often, it's silly to go without one since you don't have to scurry around the airport to find a wall outlet or be "that guy" at the conference who's hogging the wall outlet.

The EasyAcc portable charger is a no-fuss, simple charger with great features. The 6,400mAh capacity is plenty to give my iPhone 6+ two full charges (we'l get to the numbers later). The iPhone 6+ is already has excellent battery life, but this makes it all the better. It feels well constructed and has a nice, smooth finish, giving it a nice, solid feel in the hands. The footprint is very small and easy to carry. The one thing I particularly like about this model is that it has a single 2.1A x 5V USB output which is best for rapid charging with a 2A x 5V input USB-micro input for charging the charger. There's also an LED for flashlight mode, which can be redundant if you have a smartphone, but it doesn't hurt anything to have it there. There are 4 blue LED lights around a single on/off button which give the status:

4: 75-100% Capacity Remaining
3: 50-75% Capacity Remaining
2: 25-50% Capacity Remaining
1: 5-25% Capacity Remaining
Blink: 0-5% Capacity Remaining

For real-world usage data, I used my trusty iPhone 6+ on iOS 8 with Wi-Fi on and Bluetooth on. I took several calls, checked e-mail, browsed the web and played a game or two during each charge (since you'd likely be using it if you're charging, at least I do.)

Charge iPhone from 36% to 100% took 1:21 hours to charge. Charger went from 4 lights to 2.
Charge iPhone from 29% to 100% took 1:44 hours to charge. Charger went from 2 lights to blinking.

If you weren't using the phone during charging, you could theoretically get two full charges on the iPhone 6+, but I was pretty happy with these numbers.

Overall, you can't go wrong with this charger. It's the best balance of price vs. features and does and excellent job on delivering. I highly recommend it if you are looking for an excellent charger.

News: Pebble Time on Kickstarter

Source: Kickstarter

If you remember how much we loved the original Pebble from our earlier review, it should come as no surprise that we are excited to eventually get our hands on the newly announced Pebble Time on Kickstarter. The Pebble Time sports a color e-ink display with 7 day battery life.

The Kickstarter for the Pebble time showed up earlier today with a $500,000 goal by March 24, 2015. Within 24 hours, it has far exceeded that goal and is currently around $7.7M as of this writing. Apparently, this has set a bunch of new Kickstarter records.

What makes the Pebble so appealing is it's use on both popular mobile platforms, iOS and Android. The longer battery life of 7 days requires less charge time compared to its competitors which see 1-2 at most. We'll see how it fares against the almighty Apple Watch which is due in April.

We'll keep you posted with a review down the road!

Review: iClever IC-BTH01 Lightweight Wireless Bluetooth Headphones

Today we will be reviewing the iClever IC-BTH01 Lightweight Wireless Bluetooth Headphones.

I will begin by saying I'm a sucker for headphones and have many lying around the house and office. Fortunately, I have a job where I can listen to my music a majority of the day and decided this is the best way to put headphones through their paces.

The headphones were incredibly easy to pair with my iPhone 6 Plus, in fact, so easy that all there is to say is that they just work the way you would expect, and that's good. Throughout my workday I made a few occasional calls homes and listened to about 3 hours of music (I had several meetings) and the rest was idle. At the end of the day I still had about half a charge left on the headphones as reported from my iPhone.

The only real complaint I have is the shortness of the cable between the earbuds. This makes it somewhat difficult to use behind the head (in front just looks silly). This directly affects the other small issue I have which is it makes the microphone sit a bit behind where I would like. This was apparent when making calls because my wife had a hard time hearing what I was saying.

I usually prefer over-the-ear headphones over ear buds due to comfort for long listening sessions, but I have to admit that these were comfortable enough for a couple hours of use before getting a little uncomfortable which is better than expected.

The sound quality was on par with what I expected. All the ranges were there and the bass was not over bearing which is a trend in headphones these days, so I was glad to hear that they aren't trying to knock your ear drums out. They sounds good over several genres from classical to rock.

Pros
  • Great battery life.
  • Easy connectivity and use.
  • Good sound.
  • Easy and quick charge.
  • Comes with extra sized ear buds.
  • Good quality build.
  • Flat cabling for easy storage.
  • Decent price.
Neutral
  • This is more of a preference thing, but I would have liked skip buttons on the controls.
  • Not the comfiest of headphones, but definitely good for longer sessions than most ear buds.
Cons
  • Short cable makes it somewhat difficult to use behind the head.
  • Microphone made it somewhat difficult to hear for those I was talking to, this is mostly due to where it rests due to the shortness of the cable.
Overall, these are a great set of headphones and a great step up from the packages Apple headphones. They are a great value and I would recommend them for anyone looking for a decent budget bluetooth set of headphones.

Review: Amazon Echo

On November 6, 2014, Amazon surprised the market unveiled its latest device, the Amazon Echo and let people sign up for a special $99 pre-release price instead of the stand $199. Some people have already received their units as early as November 20, but our managed to get here on December 9. Let's jump right in and see what the Amazon Echo can do and if it's right for you.

Features and Design
The Amazon Echo is designed to sit in the middle of the living area where it can be easily accessed by any member of the household. It's a cylindrical device that requires to be plugged into a power outlet to always be on and comes with a remote control to control volume and skip. It connects to the internet via Wi-Fi and can be used as a standard bluetooth speaker for your phone or tablet. Here's a list of key features and specs:

  • Dimensions: 3.27" Diameter x 9.25" Height
  • Speakers: 2.5" Woofer and 2" Tweeter
  • 7 Microphone Array
  • Light and Volume Ring
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
  • Other Features:
    • Far Field Voice Recognition
    • Amazon Store Integration
    • 360° Omni-Directional Sound
    • Just Ask "Alexa"
      • News, Weather, and Information
      • Music
      • Alarms, Timers, and Lists
      • Questions and Answers
    • Automatic Updates
Software
The Amazon Echo app is used to control your Echo, even when away from home. It should be noted that there is not currently a native Amazon Echo app for iOS, but a web-based app you can pin to your home screen.

Out of the Box
There's a few things to note right out of the box. The unit comes in a plain black box with an orange inner lining, similar to other recent Kindle Fire tablets and products. It's bigger than I was anticipating, but has a nice quality heft to it. It has a nice feel to it overall and the volume wheel has the right amount of resistance to it. Other than that, it's not something you're going to be handling a lot anyways since it's plugged into the wall at all times.

One other thing to note was the controller that comes packaged with the Echo. The controller itself is pretty standard with play/pause, skip, and volume buttons with a voice button so you don't have to always call out Alexa. What was interesting with the remote was the mount for it which has a sticky backing to attach to a place with easy access (I picked my nightstand). The remote attaches to the mount magnetically which is a nice little feature.

Really, the biggest problem I had, especially in a two-story home, was to pick a spot in the home where it would be used most. We eventually settled on our bedroom.

Setup
Setup was incredibly simple with the accompanying app. The first step is to connect to the Echo's Wi-Fi directly from your device, it shows up as a hotspot. Once connected, you return to the app to enter your local Wi-Fi settings that will be used from here on out. In the Echo app, you will all set all of your music accounts that will be used with our Amazon Echo including: Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn. In all, it wasn't long before we were up and running, maybe 5 minutes tops.

Feature Testing and Day-to-Day Use
Really, it was hard to figure out where to start since I'm not used to verbalizing my internet questions, even in the age of Siri (the iPhone voice assistant), Cortana (Microsoft's voice assistant), and Google Now. It just feels weird to open air your questions. Actually, it was quite humorous at times because even with my wife knowing what the Echo did, she would still yell "What?" from another room.

I also found that saying "Alexa" to get the Echo's attention was sometimes hit-or-miss and would not always recognize I was trying to address it (her). I found using the remote with the button far more convenient.

If you have Amazon Prime, playing music is a cinch. Just tell the Echo to play a genre, artist, album, or song and it will happily play you the tunes you desire. Though I'm not sure how useful this would be if you did not have Amazon Prime since it pulls it library from Prime Music (at least with how ours is set up). This was also hit-or0miss and would sometimes play something completely different than what I had asked for. We'll see if it gets better with time.

Asking day-to-day questions was where it struggled the most. We have gotten so used to asking Siri sports questions and directions. Without using the accompanying app, there are no visual clues as to what it's thinking. Almost 4 out of 5 questions were answered with it asking me to check my Echo app for a web search. I found this to be especially true with any current events including sports and politics.

Inside the app, you can tell the Echo if it answered each question correctly or not to help it learn, though I do not have a method to quantify how well it works if it does.

The Echo has other interesting utilities including the ability to set the alarm, though only one for now unfortunately and one day at a time (no repeating). There's also a news portal on the app where you can tell the Echo where you want to get your daily news update. This features actually works quite well and I could see how it would be nice for those who listen to the news when they get up. Though I imagine there are many like myself who wake up before other members of the household and this feature simply is not an option.

I will say this, if you are a house of small children such as myself, once they learn the magic words to turn the Echo on, prepare yourselves for the kids to go berserk asking it all sorts of ridiculous questions (most of which will default to web searches) and asking it to play all sorts of silly songs. Fortunately, you can set a mute with a button on top of the Echo itself so that it will ignore being woke to answer questions and play your music, though I find this to be self-defeating in purpose.

As a bluetooth speaker it works perfectly fine and works as well as you'd expect. The sound quality is crisp and clear and pairing is as simple as bluetooth gets. I am no audiophile, but I can tell you the sound is very pleasant and holds it's own in a sea of high-end bluetooth speakers.

One more thing to note is the misfires. I was surprised at how many times I'd have to repeat saying "Alexa" to get it's attention. Then the time to give a command seems too short before it errors out. You had better darn well thought your question through before you ask it, otherwise there's no prayer of it being answered. I was also surprised at how many times it has thought I or my family was addressing it resulting in odd, sometimes humorous, outcomes.

One final piece to mention is that of purchases. I simply have not been able to successfully order anything from the Echo. I may be doing it wrong, but even still, I would have thought this would have been more intuitive since Amazon wants you to be tightly engrained into their environment. I could not add things to my wishlist or even ask what the deals of the day were. It's not a good platform for buying things off Amazon which is a bit of a disappointment.

Final Thoughts
Really, I wanted to like it, and I want to like it, but I still struggle to understand exactly what problem it solves. I feel like my phone is able to do all these tasks but more discreetly, accurately, and frankly more simply.

I do have to hand it to Amazon however for trying to break the mold and engineering something completely different. It certainly has it's merits and has its potential. But overall, the result simply feels half-baked and gives a product that doesn't live up to it's full potential.

As a bluetooth speaker it works fine and as a simple music playing device it certainly does well, but beyond that it simply struggles to find it's niche in our home. Perhaps future software releases will make it more usable, but until then I feel the Amazon Echo falls flat. It's unfortunate because it a well-engineered and beautiful device that is help back by some major issues with software, which is why I remain hopeful for the Amazon Echo. I also have to remind myself that it's still in a bit of a beta phase. I will keep you all updated as software improves.
