I have a new build that I will putting together for a video in the next week or so. It's an exciting time for sure!
  2. Reviews
    • I have a few regular reviews that I am doing that got me where I am today, so stay tuned for several of those in the next couple of weeks as well.
  3. Blog
    • The blog has been in the background quietly working for me to support the channel, but from today I plan on doing a weekly post, at a minimum, what I'm up to and what you have to look forward to as well as tech and PC related content.

News: Videos Coming Shortly!

Over the past month or so I have been hard at work getting a good video setup for YouTube videos for unboxings, reviews, and computer builds. I have invested in some fancy lights and software and have been playing around with setups, capturing video, and editing. I'm sure my style will change as time goes on, but these first couple of videos represent lots of preparation and work behind the scenes. I hope you enjoy the next chapter of Goto Tech Reviews. Stay tuned for some upcoming content!

News: Journey to Youtube Channel Setup

Hi everyone!

I am committing myself to creating more content and branching out a bit. This site from the beginning has largely been a tech accessories review page. I am now starting to branch into reviewing, making guides for, and discussing PCs. Computers have always been a passion of mine and I want to share that passion with the world. I am currently drafting up potential YouTube episodes, buying guides, reviews, build logs, and some troubleshooting.

Here are some ideas that I am toying with (starting with my new Skylake build since I don't have sponsors....yet)

  • Motherboard Review: MSI Z170A Gaming Pro
  • GPU Showdown: NVidia GTX 970 vs GTX 980 Ti
  • Intel Core i7-6700K Overclock Results
  • Review: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe Case
  • Review: Corsair H115i Extreme Performance AIO Water Cooler
  • Introduce My Build
These are all just early ideas I have come up with and would love suggestions on what you would like to see so I can focus my energy there.

I really want to grow the audience as I believe that part of learning and growing comes when everyone participates and shares their knowledge (thank you internet).

So, I will keep you all updated with upcoming content and looking forward to expanding Goto Tech Reviews!

News: Still Working on YouTube Build Inspiration

Hey everyone! So I have already done the build now (twice actually) and have yet to actually record it. I have been drawing inspiration from other YouTube channels, like my favorites, Linus Tech Tips and Awesomesauce News. It's more of a self conscious thing and I don't like how I look and sound on camera but I actually did a few takes of introducing my build but never really felt satisfied.

I have definitely acquired the "build bug" as I like to call it. I have lots of ideas for fun videos and fun PC builds but just not sure where to start. I'd really like to build the blog and eventually have it be more YouTube centric.

Continue to stay tuned for more reviews and videos in the near future! Thanks everyone!

News and Upcoming DIY Build and Reviews

Hi all, been a while since I've done a non-review post on the blog. That doesn't I've been idle in the background, in fact quite the contrary.

It's kind of a long story that starts with, of all things, floors. To save some short term money I sold my trusty MacBookPro Retina 15 inch. I tried just using my wife's cheap netbook, but I still needed something that could do basic photo editing (Lightroom). Which lead me to the purchase of an Alienware Alpha.

I was exposed to a whole new world that I haven't visited in almost a decade. I could now upgrade the processor, which I immediately did to an Intel Core i5-4590S. I could also upgrade the RAM and the hard drive which I also did as well. It opened up my inner computer geek and like a gateway drug, left me wanting for more.

Before you know it, I'm selling it on Craigslist, looking up parts and doing research on Intel Skylake processors, Z170 motherboards, and DDR4 RAM. Not long after that, I have parts ordered for a new PC. Stay tuned for reviews on individual parts and the overall build as well as a review on the Alienware Alpha.

News: Microsoft HoloLens and Minecraft - A Match Made in Heaven

It's no secret to those who know me that I love Minecraft. I also love all things technology and one thing I have been keeping my eye on is VR (Virtual Reality). There are a lot of major players out there right now working on this technology as we speak: Sony, Microsoft, and Oculus Rift (owned by Facebook of all companies). One of these has stood out to me more recently and that is Microsoft's HoloLens.

The HoloLens was demonstrated running their recently acquired IP from Mojang game called Minecraft. Let's just say that the E3 demo impressed me, nay, made me drool. Minecraft and VR are a match made in heaven which made me wondering when I could run such a setup. Who wouldn't enjoy feeling like they were part of their Minecraft creations? I know I would! Enjoy the video below and leave your thoughts!

News: Pebble Time on Kickstarter

Source: Kickstarter

If you remember how much we loved the original Pebble from our earlier review, it should come as no surprise that we are excited to eventually get our hands on the newly announced Pebble Time on Kickstarter. The Pebble Time sports a color e-ink display with 7 day battery life.

The Kickstarter for the Pebble time showed up earlier today with a $500,000 goal by March 24, 2015. Within 24 hours, it has far exceeded that goal and is currently around $7.7M as of this writing. Apparently, this has set a bunch of new Kickstarter records.

What makes the Pebble so appealing is it's use on both popular mobile platforms, iOS and Android. The longer battery life of 7 days requires less charge time compared to its competitors which see 1-2 at most. We'll see how it fares against the almighty Apple Watch which is due in April.

We'll keep you posted with a review down the road!

Discussion: Apple Watch

Source: Apple, GSM Arena

Let's face it, the Apple Watch has been a long time coming. It's been one of the longest rumored devices by Apple that I can remember, second to the iPhone. So what's all the fuss about with this new wearable by Apple.

The Apple Watch was September 9, 2014 with a "Spring 2015" release date, which some rumors of that being around Valentine's Day 2015 with a starting price point of $349. Apple Watch comes equipped with an Apple made S1 processor.

Looks and Variations
It will come in two sizes: 38mm and 42mm. There are also six varieties including: silver aluminum, space grey aluminum, stainless steel, space grey stainless steel, 18K yellow gold, and 18k rose gold. There are also six types of watch straps. There are technically three separate Apple Watches: Sport, Apple Watch, and Apple Watch Edition.

Technical Specs
There are still some unknowns at this point since the device is not yet available, but here's what we do know:

  • Processor - Apple S1
  • RAM - 512MB
  • Storage Capacity - 4GB
  • Battery Capacity - Unknown
  • Battery Life - Unknown (Though it's been heard that a daily charge will be required.)
  • Resolution - 38mm @ 340 x 272 px and 42mm @ 390 x 312 px
  • Sapphire-Crystal Display
  • Mag-Safe Charging
  • Compatible with iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, and 6+

Features
The Apple Watch comes equipped with a variation of iOS software that works closely with your iPhone. Here's a list of features from Apple's website:
  • Messages
  • Phone
  • Mail
  • Sketch
  • Walkie-Talkie
  • Tap
  • Heartbeat
  • Fitness
  • Apple Pay
  • Calendar
  • Maps
  • Passbook
  • Music
  • Apple TV Remote
  • Remote Camera
  • Timer
  • Stopwatch
  • Alarms
  • Stock
  • Weather
  • Photos
  • Siri
  • Glances
  • Actionable Notifications
  • Third-Party Webkit Apps (The SDK was released 11/17/14)

Thoughts
The truth is, Apple is entering a market that is already starting to crowd, with devices already available from Samsung, Microsoft,  Asus, LG, Sony, and Motorola. These other smart watches are typically $250 or less while Apple's comes out on top of the heap, starting at $349. They have been in this situation before with the iPhone however and we all know how that played out.

There's a couple of concerns that I keep coming back to: battery life and water resistance. A daily charge for your phone is one thing since you don't actually wear it, but a watch on the other hand (no pun intended), is typically something you put on and forget it's there type of device. Also, if you're charging it overnight, it's kinda hard to do sleep metrics which I think Apple may have missed the boat on.

Then the issue of water resistance, it's likely that you'd have to take it off before baths, showers, and swimming. Again, the inconvenience is pretty high, you could be taking your watch on and off twice a day, potentially. In a first world problem sort of way, you should not need to be taking your watch off that frequently.

Will I buy one? The answer is yes, but that's probably the engineer in me wanting to get my hands on first article builds more than anything. What Apple did right for sure is playing the fashion side of it. A watch is supposed to look good, something Apple excels at and the competition seemed to not focus on as much (I'm looking at you Samsung). I have not seen one in person, yet, but from what I've seen it's a remarkable looking device.

The jury is still out there for me on the Apple Watch. On one hand, you have cutting edge technology, style, 3rd party apps, Apple Pay, and usability. On the other hand, you have a high entry point ($349 is up there), battery life, and possible lack of water resistance. I personally cannot wait to try one.

Stay posted for a full review when they come out.
